Professional Growth Plan

Below is my Professional Growth Plan (PGP).  School Counseling legal and ethical guidelines mandate ongoing continuing education.  As I emerge into the profession as a new school counselor, it is important I have a thoughtful plan as to how best to meet this mandate, integrating both formal and informal opportunities for professional growth. My professional growth plan lists areas where I would like to continue to attend to regarding skill development as well as a specific plan for goal attainment.

First year goals:

Communicate with caregivers on ways to encourage student success

  • Connect with caregivers to determine needs
  • Continue academic research
  • Connect with local resources
  • Collaborate with in-school resources to obtain information
  • Attend professional development opportunities that address this need
  • Continue to update professional resource file

Monitor academic progresses and create intervention plans for students to reach potential

  • Make contact with students at the beginning of the year and share with them my role as a school counselor, as well as provide them with my plans stay connected with them throughout the year
  • Contact parents/guardians at the beginning of the year and share with them my role as a school counselor, as well as provide them with my plan to reach out to them and their children
  • Use data and technology to stay current on student progress
  • Collaborate with students, parents, teachers and administration
  • Use theory driven, research based methods to implement appropriate interventions for students

Advocate for under-served populations to maintain enrollment in school and graduate

  • Identify students through data and other means who could benefit from advocating
  • Collaborate with administration and school staff to work towards maintaining enrollment and graduation
  • Connect students with resources that assist with school engagement and graduation
  • Work to ensure basic needs of families are being met that could deter school attendance or graduation
  • Connect with community leaders who share this mission
  • Attend professional development opportunities that address this goal

Second year goal:

Begin professional school counseling audit

  • Conduct audit
  • Include interested members in process
  • Obtain feedback from stakeholders
  • Select a few areas where improvement could be made
  • Consult colleagues, research, and peers for best practices in desired area
  • Obtain data to determine efficacy of implementation
